Establishing a morning routine has been a life changer for me. I know it might sound like I am exaggerating when I say that but that is the truth.
Before establishing a morning routine I felt I was always living day to day, always in fire fighting mode, not being able to spend quality time with my family or make any progress in achieving my dreams. For years I tried to start working out. I gave up as many times as I attempted to start. I felt frustrated because I was not able to make progress towards achieving my personal goals as fast as I wanted, a great example is my podcast. I thought about, talked about and dreamed about having my own podcast for over a year and never took one concrete step to achieve this.
Since I established my morning routine I feel more full of energy through the day, I am more positive, more mindful and present. I have been consistently working out for 9 months, 6 times a week without having missed one workout. As to my podcast, well I have already published 4 episodes.
A morning routine is something very personal. My morning routine might look very different than yours, and that is totally ok. You need to build the routine that best fits your lifestyle and better supports you becoming the best version of yourself.
When I build my morning routine I intentionally incorporate seven components into it.
I guess, before I jump into those key components, there is one important aspect and success factor in my morning routine that I need to mention. That is that I wake up 1 to 1.5 hours before everyone else does at home. Being able to have that block of time just for myself without distractions makes a world of difference.
Here are the building blocks of my morning routine:
Get moving. I ware up one to one and a half hours before everybody else at home. The first thing I do is hit play on a workout. I workout in my basement. I bought a Netflix of workouts so I just need my tennis shoes, a pair of dumbbells and my TV or iPad. No matter what type of exercise you do, the important thing is that you move your body for 20-30 min every day.
Hydrate. Water is so essential. I aim to drink 30 ounces of water every morning before breakfast. Did you knew that up to 60% of your body is water? we need water to be able to focus and be productive. So make sure you start your day hydrating yourself.
Be grateful. Every morning I write down the five things I am grateful for. Starting my day with a grateful mindset helps me be and stay positive through the day and be more present and mindful of everything happening in my life and around me.
Get inspired. For me, my dreams is what inspires me. The idea of making those a reality motivates me, so I write down my 10 dreams. For you this might look like reading an inspirational quote or meditate. Whatever it is, do something that inspires you and sets your heart on fire. For me, aside from connecting with my 10-year goals, another thinng I love to do to get inspirted is to incorporate personal devopment. I leverage Growth Day for this. I listen to the daily fire (a daily inspirting podcast) and I check in with myself using the daily check in and the morning journal promps built in on the platform.
Get focused. I am not able to to focus on all my goals at once so I like to identify the one things that I can do this week or today that will move me close to realizing one of my dreams.
Get ready. I check my calendar every morning and make sure that everything in my calendar has a purpose. I also make sure that I build in time to focus on that one thing I said I wanted to do today or this week that will get me closer to my dream.
Fuel your body with the right foods. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, you probably have heard that from your parents or grandparents. Making sure you eat a nutritious and healthy breakfast is key. I make this a non-negotiable every day.
